Burkina Faso has been increasingly impacted by the activities and attacks of Islamist armed groups whose influence reaches from the regions bordering Mali.
A total of 6.2 million people are now affected by the conflict in Burkina Faso, and nearly one million people have been displaced because of attacks and are in need of humanitarian assistance .
Burkina Faso both deserves support from increased trade and investments to help towards peace and progress. Here the cashew production can help.
West and East Africa produce over half of the world’s cashew crop and produce some of the best cashews in the world. Yet due to the lack of processing capacity, most raw cashew nuts from West Africa go to Vietnam or India for further processing and export. This reduces the profits to farmers and makes traceability and quality control difficult and opaque. Farmers in Burkina Faso, a landlocked country with increasing levels of conflict, have very little control over where they sell their product and limited incentives to improve quality.
warfair and the Danish company Sowco cooperate with Pakka , a Swiss-based nut company to import cashews directly from the factory Gebana Burkina Faso . The cashews are bought from over 3,200 families from local cooperatives and processes them locally. This means they can select for better quality cashews, and farmers receive better prices for their product because you’ve cut out all of the added costs of shipping to Vietnam, processing in Vietnam, and then exporting again from Vietnam
The nuts are harvested and dried by farmers, then processed locally at the Gebana factory in Burkina Faso, where they’re steamed, shelled, dried, and peeled. The local processing guarantees higher quality and traceability, as well as bringing greater value to the farmers who grow them.
The cashews give an important contribution to jobs and income in Burkina Faso.
The cashews are organic and Fairtrade certified.
