Afghanistan has for close to 40 years suffered from war and conflict with hundreds of thousands of people killed and millions of refugees. The fighting has had a devastating impact on the Afghan society with high insecurity, widespread poverty, and continuous lack of basic social services in large parts of the society.
Of the total population of around 35 million, more than one third live in extreme poverty and more than 6 million depend on humanitarian assistance.
The Afghan people are extremely resilient but strongly need trade, jobs and income. Here the saffron production can help.
Afghanstan has traditionally produced some of the finest Saffron. The saffron from Afghanistan has won international awards and is referred to as "Afghanistans"Red Gold". However, after decades of war in Afghanistan the production has gone down and the export to the EU has almost stopped .
Together with Karlsens Krydderier in Denmark we have started importing saffron from farmers in Afghanistan to Denmark. The first 2 kilo has arrived and we hope it will be available in Danish retail shops in October 2020.
Around 2/3 of the farmers have previously been refugees, but have now returned home. The production of saffron secures them a much needed income, and helps them to pay school fees for their children. Saffron is a high-value crop that can replace opium production and thus, in more than one way, contributes to peace, income and stability in Afghanistan.
In all ways it is a success story and Afghanistan needs this.
Afghanistan Red Gold Saffron Ltd (trademark Herat Saffron) has been supported by the International Trade Center and is now both ISO, HACCP and FDA certified. There has also been a Danish contribution to the saffron production. The Danish organization DACAAR was actively involved in starting the saffron production and supported the 200 men and women in Saffron Association of Barnabad. They are contributing to the saffron, we have received in Denmark.
