Somalia has suffered from conflict for almost three decades with severe human suffering and insecurity as a result. An estimated half a million people have been killed and millions have fled internally or as refugees.
The creation of the international AU-led peacekeeping operation (AMISOM) and the establishment of a Federal government in 2012 has led to a fragile but positive development in the war-torn country. However, of the 12,3 million citizens more than 40% still live in extreme poverty and almost 5 million depend on humanitarian assistance.
Somalia both deserves support from increased trade and investments to help towards peace and progress.
Somalia has historically produced some of the finest Sesame seeds. And Sesame is now one of the first and most important products to be exported from Somalia in the aftermath of the conflict. It is for Somali farmers a very resilient and stable crop.
However, the production has been unstable and the value-chain very underdeveloped and most is sold via Dubai. Expanding and improving access to the European market would be important and encouraging for the Somali farmers and for the country, and could pave the way for further investments, increased income and more jobs.
In cooperation with Somali Agriculture Technical Group (SATG) and its private sector arm Filsan we are working to import Sesame seeds to Denmark/EU from Somalia. We have received the first samples (see photo). In Denmark the project is supported by Valsemøllen , who will assess the quality of the seeds.
